Prachi Desai is an Indian film and television actress. She is best known for her role as Bani Walia in the Hindi television drama Kasamh Se which aired on Zee TV.

Prachi Desai not to appear on Small Screen again

Actress Prachi Desai, who began her acting journey with popular TV serial “Kasamh Se”, says she has bid adieu to the small screen for good.

“I had bid goodbye to television, so I am not going back. But since I started from there and became famous because of TV, the connect always remains,” Prachi told IANS.

She acknowledges that the small screen was becoming bigger with the entry of Bollywood stars through reality shows.

“Almost every film actor goes to TV nowadays, be it to judge a show, host it or for promoting their film. It has become big with big stars on small screen,” she said.

After making her acting debut as on TV as Bani in 2006, she won the second season of dancing reality show “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa” in 2007. Later, she ventured into films with 2008 film “Rock On!!” and was seen romancing Emraan Hashmi in “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai” in 2010.

In 2012, the 23-year-old actress will be back on the silver screen with “Bol Bachchan” opposite Abhishek Bachchan and in “I, Me aur Main” opposite John Abraham.

She will also been seen in a cameo in Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra-starer “Teri Meri Kahaani”.

You rose to fame with Ekta Kapoor's TV soap; how did you handle the adulation that you got suddenly?
In the first two years that I made it big on TV, I had no clue what was happening. I was very young and missed doing normal things like going to college or hanging out with my friends because I worked all day long. When I started getting popular, I was very happy, but I was left with no time to enjoy it. In television, fame comes really fast. If your show works, your career is made. But it was also something that disturbed me. Initially, I got excited about it, but eventually it started getting to me because I couldn't do anything normal anymore. But I learnt how to handle it eventually.

Ekta Kapoor once called you her 'blue-eyed baby'. What's your equation with her today?
(Laughs) Really? When I started working, I didn't know her; I had only heard about her. She would give me advice. And after that we became friends. Also, her mother Shobhaji offered me moral support. I know that Ekta is always going to be there for me and vice-versa. Professionally, she's extremely busy and so am I. I'm happy that she's doing fabulously well for herself. But we don't discuss work with each other.

Like you, Vidya Balan started her career with television. Now she's reigning the silver screen with her remarkable performances. Do you want to follow her footsteps?
(Smiles) Vidya is one of my favourite actors and I think she just brilliant at everything she does. I idolize her, but I don't think I can model my career on somebody else.

If you are offered a good TV soap, would you take the offer?
TV is a medium that will remain very close to my heart, but right now going back is a complete no-no. I bid goodbye to TV when I did my first film, Rock On!!

How has your journey in Bollywood been so far?
I will always be grateful to Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar and Abhishek Kapoor for giving me Rock On!! I was very young then and I didn't have many friends in the industry. I don't think anybody took me seriously at that time because they must have thought I was just a one-film wonder. Thankfully, after my debut, I bagged Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, and then Bol Bachchan happened. But I will always have to struggle, since I am not an industry kid. Outsiders don't fit in as well as star kids do.

In Detail...
We outsiders are not given as many chances; it's very rare to bag a great film. But star kids are offered films on a platter, even though most of the time their films flop! With all due respect, I think I am honest when I say it's always going to be difficult for outsiders.
How do you plan to deal with this kind of competition around?
If I start taking any kind of competition seriously, I'd be out of this industry in a month. Random things are written and spoken about us, and if you start thinking too much, it's never going to work out. At some point, you have to cut off.

Are you wary of all the back-biting and bitching in the industry?
(Smiles) I don't let such things affect me. Initially, when you hear someone say something bad about you, you will react or take it in a certain way, depending on your personality. After a point, you have to stop thinking and reacting to it. I'd get hassled and disturbed, but I realized that there is no point. You are up alone against everybody. You can't go around town explaining yourself to people, even if the rumours are not true.

Prachi’s hooked on to Zumba:
Post her return from a long holiday in the US, Prachi Desai seems to be a changed gal. She has returned with a new passion: Zumba.

It is learnt that a friend introduced the actress to the Latin American dance and fitness form during her visit there. And not only did Prachi find it a fun dance form, but she also practised it regularly to stay in shape. If that's not enough, she has also acquired a new collection of music to play while she indulges in her Zumba sessions back home. According to a friend of the actress, "Prachi has become addicted to the dance form and ensures that she takes time out for her sessions every day without fail. She's looking and feeling great ever since she's got hooked on to it during her visit to the US, so she sees no reason to not continue practising it at home while in Mumbai."

My roles so far have been poles apart and have proved that I’m versatile.” The actor also describes her recent flag bearing role at the parade as an overwhelming experience, “It was an experience to remember, and a wonderful atmosphere. It was a moment of pride, the people were lovely, but most of all it was a huge honour for me. The experience has left a lasting impression on my mind.”
